Grief: When Life Doesn’t Look Like We Thought It Would

This month, we want to talk about something that touches every one of us at some point in life: grief.

When we hear the word “grief,” we often think about losing someone we love. And certainly, the loss of a loved one can bring some of the deepest grief we will ever experience. But grief can take many different forms.

We can grieve the loss of a relationship. We can grieve when a relationship wasn’t healthy or ended differently than we hoped.

We can grieve the career we thought we would have but never did. We can grieve dreams that didn’t become reality, opportunities that never came, or the life we imagined for ourselves that looks very different from the life we are actually living.

Sometimes, grief is mourning not something we had, but something we expected to have.

And that grief is real.

Grief Is a Part of Life

Grief is a normal part of being human. There are seasons when life doesn’t unfold the way we thought it would, and it’s okay to acknowledge the pain that comes with that.

We don’t always have to understand it. We don’t have to pretend that it doesn’t hurt. And we don’t have to rush through the grieving process.

There may be moments when we ask, “Why did this happen?” or “Why didn’t things turn out differently?”

We may never fully understand the why.

But we can know the Who.

God.

God sees the parts of our stories that no one else sees. He sees the disappointment, the heartbreak, the unanswered questions, and the tears we may never share with anyone else.

Psalm 56:8 reminds us:

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

What a beautiful reminder that our pain does not go unnoticed by God.

Your tears matter to Him.

Your heartache matters to Him.

Your story matters to Him.

God Does Not Waste Our Heartache

It can be difficult to understand how something painful could ever be used for good. We may not see what God is doing in the middle of our circumstances, and sometimes we may not understand it even years later.

But we can trust that God is not in the business of wasting our heartache.

The experiences we wish we could erase can become places where God brings healing, growth, compassion, wisdom, and a deeper understanding of His love.

That doesn’t mean the painful thing was good. It doesn’t mean we have to be grateful for the hurt itself.

It means we can trust that God can bring good out of what has hurt us.

He sees you where you are, and He wants good for you.

There Is Hope

Grief may be part of our journey, but grief does not have to be the end of our story.

Isaiah 40:31 says:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

There may be seasons when you feel like you are simply walking—taking one day, one moment, or even one breath at a time.

And that’s okay.

God meets us there, too.

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to know what the next chapter looks like. You can simply place your hope in Him and trust Him with the pieces of your story.

You Don’t Have to Walk Alone

Friends, there will be grief in many forms that meet us throughout life. There is no escaping every disappointment, loss, or heartbreak.

But you do not have to navigate those struggles alone.

There is a good, good God who loves you, sees you, and wants to walk alongside you through every season—including the seasons that feel especially heavy.

And if you’re a young adult reading this, we want you to know that Jacob’s Journey wants to walk alongside you, too.

Whether you’re experiencing grief, navigating a difficult season of life, searching for community, or simply wondering what it means to know God, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

If you’re interested in grief support, life coaching, community, or learning more about God, send us a message here or on Facebook.

We would love the opportunity to walk alongside you on your journey.

You are not alone. Your story matters. Your tears are seen. And there is still hope.
